The world has been a very chaotic place the past couple of years because of events that Iā€™m sure I donā€™t need to remind you about. Maybe youā€™ve been feeling a little down and donā€™t know how to elevate your mood. Well, Iā€™m here to tell you that exercise is a great way to get out of a rut.

ā€œIn order for man to succeed in life, God provided him with two means, education and physical activity. Not separately, one for the soul and the other for the body, but for the two together. With these means, man can attain perfection.ā€(Plato)

Hormones and Exercise

Exercise as we all know is great physical for the body, it can increase VO2 max and hypertrophy within the body, but exercise is also good for your mind as well. Exercise has been linked to improving mood because it elevates certain hormones such as serotonin and endorphins. Serotonin helps regulate your brain's mood, sleep, and appetite patterns. When you exercise the hormone endorphins interacts with the receptors in your brain to decrease the feeling of pain. Endorphins can also elevate your mood similar to serotonin.

Effects of consistent exercises on the body

ā€œ16 weeks of regular exercise is just as effective as anti-depressant medication in treating older people who were not exercising previously.ā€(Exercise and mood) Exercising consistently can cause a significant change in your mood regardless of what it is. It could be aerobic exercise such as walking, cycling, or running. Or it could be anaerobic training just as weightlifting.

Environment

Exercising outside has even greater benefits than just exercising in general. Studies have shown that getting exercise outside has higher levels of vitality, enthusiasm, pleasure, and self-esteem, with lower levels of tension, depression, and fatigue after exercising outside. Now when I say exercising outside it doesnā€™t need to be anything vigorous. It could be something as simple as going for a walk.

To sum it up

All in all, exercise has some great benefits besides hypertrophy or weight loss. It can improve your mood through the use of the hormones serotonin and endorphins. It might just be your key to happiness.
